Box-Office Weekend: Minecraft Remains on Top

After claiming first place last weekend by a margin of $149.7 million, A Minecraft Movie managed to hold onto the top spot again this weekend, but only by $61.5 million.

“A Minecraft Movie” posterIn its second weekend of release, Warner Brothers’ A Minecraft Movie took in $80.6 million, bringing its two-week total to $281.1 million. This was more than enough to best second-place The King of Kings, which debuted this weekend with a total of $19.1 million for Angel Studios. Meanwhile, The Amateur claimed third place with its $15 million debut for 20th Century Studios. Just behind that, with $8.3 million earned over the weekend was A24’s Warfare which claimed fourth place in its first weekend of release. The fourth new film in the top ten, Drop, debuted in fifth place with $7.5 million taken in for Universal Pictures International (UPI).

The final debut of the weekend, The Chosen: Last Supper Part 3 finished in sixth place with $5.8 million taken in over the last three days. In its third weekend of release, A Working Man fell from second- to seventh-place where it added $3.1 million, bringing its overall total to $33.5 million for Amazon MGM Studios. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures saw Snow White fall four spots to land in eighth place this weekend where it added $2.8 million to raise its four-week total to $81.9 million. Also falling four spots was Universal Pictures’ The Woman in the Yard which finished in ninth place this weekend with $2.1 million taken in in its third weekend of release, giving the film an overall total of $20.4 million. Finally, falling from third place last weekend to tenth this weekend, The Chosen: The Last Supper Part 2 made $931,684, which allowed it to lift its two-week total to $11.1 million.

This weekend saw half of last weekend’s top ten pushed from this weekend’s list as the films that claimed sixth- through tenth-place seven days ago, were forced from this week’s top ten. After three weeks in release, and a sixth-place finish last weekend, A24’s Death of a Unicorn left the top ten with an overall total of $9.0 million. Last weekend’s seventh-place film, The Chosen: Last Supper also drops from the top ten in its third week of release with a cumulative total of $19.3 million. Meanwhile, Neon’s Hell of a Summer lasted only one weekend in the top ten as it departs with a two-week total of $2.9 million. After cracking the top ten last weekend, Bleecker Street Media’s The Friend failed to maintain its momentum and departs the top ten with a three-week total of $3.2 million. Finally, with a nine-week tally of $199.9 million, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures’ Captain America: Brave New World also dropped from the top ten this weekend.
