Box-Office Weekend: Snow White Is Queen

A new film adorns the top spot of the box-office weekend again as Disney’s Snow White debuted $38.6 million ahead of its closest competition.

“Snow White” posterWalt Disney Studios Motion Pictures saw its latest live-action adaptation of a beloved animated film, Snow White, debut atop the box-office weekend with a three-day total of $43.0 million. This was more than enough to best second-place Black Bag which managed only $4.4 million in its second weekend of release, despite climbing from third place and claiming second for Focus Features. Meanwhile, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures also enjoyed a jump from fourth to third place for Captain America: Brave New World which took in $4.1 million over the weekend, bringing its six-week total to $192.1 million for the studio. After finishing in second place last weekend, Mickey 17 dropped two spots to land in fourth this weekend where it added $3.9 million to lift its three-week total to $40.2 million for Warner Brothers. Paramount Pictures International then saw Novocaine tumble from first to fifth place, where it made $3.8 million, giving it a two-week total of $15.8 million.

Sixth place was claimed by newcomer The Alto Knights, which made Warner Bros. $3.2 million over the weekend. Ketchup Entertainment’s animated film The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie took in $1.8 million as it fell two spots to claim seventh place in its second week of release, giving it a cumulative total of $6.5 million. Neon saw The Monkey climb a spot in its fifth week of release to land in eighth place where it added $1.54 million, giving it an overall total of $37.9 million. This was just enough to edge out DreamWorks Distribution’s Dog Man which brought in $1.5 million over the weekend, raising its eight-week tally to $95.6 million. At the end of the list was The Last Supper which fell from sixth to tenth place with $1.3 million taken in over the weekend, giving the film a two-week total of $5.3 million.

Unlike the previous two weekends, only a pair of films fell from the top ten over the past three days. After six weeks in release and a seventh-place finish last week, Paddington in Peru packed its bags and left the top ten with an overall total of $43.7 million for Sony Pictures Releasing. Finally, after four weeks in release, Focus Features saw Last Breath leave the top ten with an overall total earned of $20.4 million.
