While "Amsterdam" may not be David O. Russell’s finest work, it does provide a wave of euphoria in witnessing an attempt at something spectacularly different.

While it proves wildly entertaining and engaging for most of its running time, "Thor: Love and Thunder" ends up a bit too light on the story side of the ledger.

Knight of Cups tells the story of a Hollywood screenwriter (Christian Bale) who laments his purpose in life. Strippers, parties, money, family dysfunction, the works. Each interaction he shares comes and goes with ghostly ease, stepping up to drop their two cents of disgruntlement before receding back into the evening’s debauchery. Vice and vulgarity become a source of addiction, a cocktail that g...[Read More]
Default swaps, synthetic CDO, and subprime loans are not the first things that come to mind when watching a star-studded Hollywood drama. In fact, unless one happens to be a Wall Street stock advisor, these terms sound like nothing more than a superfluous runaround to ensure that the men in charge stay in charge – at least, that’s how narrator Jared Vennett (Ryan Gosling) sells it. As the eyes, ea...[Read More]
Exodus: Gods and Kings is unequivocally a technically savvy remake of the classic film The Ten Commandments (1956). The Ten Commandments was, for its day, pretty amazing in and of itself. Those that may have a problem with it ...[Read More]

First, Ben Affleck gets cast in the new Superman vs. Batman film; then it’s revealed that the movie will be filmed in the Detroit area – all great news for any Batfan living in Michigan like me. I think the best news is that the production will need abo...[Read More]
I’ve been eagerly anticipating The Dark Knight Rises (and secretly dreading it) ever since the release of Batman Begins. The anticipation came from wanting to see what Christopher Nolan did next and the dread came from knowing this was it. Well, the time has come for the final installment in Nolan’s treatment of the Batman universe, and without spoiling anything, this Bat-geek loved it. The Dark K...[Read More]
In the first half hour of Batman Begins, Thomas Wayne asks young Bruce this question after he falls into a well: “Why do we fall Bruce?” The answer to the elder Wayne’s question is so we can learn to pick ourselves up. Batman fell down pretty hard during Joel Schumacher’s watch and it was up to Christopher Nolan to pick the franchise back up. And pick it up Nolan did…so much so, that I don’t think...[Read More]
